How to Avoid Post-Holiday Syndrome

Recently, a catchword “post-holiday syndrome” has caught our attention, which refers to a general feeling of depression before returning to work, including fatigue, lack of appetite and concentration, irritability and feeling of helplessness, etc. The syndrome has negative impacts on our life, our work, our study and our health. So what can we do to avoid post-holiday syndrome?

As the syndrome is usually caused by irregular lifestyles during the vacation, thus the most effective way to avoid the syndrome is to avoid such irregular lifestyles in the vacation. For example, we had better keep the same lifestyle as the usual, like get up on time, go to bed on time, so that we would not make our life irregular. If we can keep such regular and healthy lifestyles all the time, we would not suffer the post-holiday syndrome.

On the other hand, keeping positive and relaxed is another way to avoid and deal with the post-holiday syndrome. Keeping positive and relaxed will help us view things from a positive way and keep away from negative mood.

In a word, leading a regular and healthy life and keeping positive and relaxed are effective ways to avoid the post-holiday syndrome.

To Spend the “Golden Week” On The Road

The 7-days-long holiday is entitled “Golden Week” by the Chinese government to celebrate the most important festival in China: The Spring Festival. The past decade has witnessed private cars from luxuries to common equipment, as well as the Chinese people celebrate Spring Festival from traditional ways to modern ones. Nowadays, more and more people choose to celebrate the Spring Festival Golden Week to travel by driving their own cars with families.

From my personal angle alone, driving your own car is a worthwhile way to try when you decide to travel. Why?

The initial reason lies in that driving your own car is liberal. Compared with joining a travel agency, driving makes your touring time more flexible. Imaging, when you are driving along the national roads, the setting sun paints the trees, remote mountains with a golden glory, you could stop the car whenever you want and enjoy the scene. However, if you are a member of a travel group, your schedule is beyond your decision.

Another reason I suggest self-driving tourism is that it enhances the family bonds, emotionally. On the road, only family members are in the car, they could exchange more private thoughts with each other, they could make jokes which only involving family members, they could hug and kiss without any hesitating. Obviously, the emotional connections would become closer because of words and contact during this tour.

Therefore, let’ s take our families and try to spend the “Golden Week” on the road!

Waste can be seen everywhere in the school. Some students ask for more food than they can eat and others often forget to turn off the lights when they leave the classroom. They say they can afford these things. But I don’t agree with them.

Waste can bring a lot of problems. Although China is rich in some resources(资源), we are short of(缺乏) others, for example, fresh water(淡水). It is reported that we will have no coal(煤) or oil to use in 100 years. So if we go on wasting our resources, what can we use in the future and where can we move? Think about it. I think we should say no to the students who waste things every day. Everybody should stop wasting as soon as possible.

In our everyday life, we can do many things to prevent waste from happening, for example, turn off the water taps(水龙头) when we finish washing, turn off the lights when we leave the classroom, try not to order more food than we need, and so on. Little by little, everything will be changed. Waste can be stopped one day, if we do our best.

Lizards(蜥蜴) are unusual, but they can make good pets because most of them are small and easy to care for. They do not make loud noises, and they do not need to go for walks or take baths(洗澡)。

Of course, some lizards make better pets than others. One of the most popular lizards in pet stores is the bearded dragon. Bearded dragons are active during the day and do not mind people holding them. Geckos are another popular pet lizard. They are a little more difficult to care for. Geckos are active at night and need a warm place to live. Like bearded dragons, they can be held by their owners. Both of th ese lizards can live ten years or more when they are well cared for.

Two lizards that are bad choices for pets are iguanas and chameleons. Iguanas can grow to be almost two meters (nearly six feet), so they need a big space to live in. I loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it when mother sat doing letters. Looking at the ink bottle, pens and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world.

Years later , during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother, “But the desk,” she said again, “is for Elizabeth.”

I never saw her get angry, and never saw her cry. I knew she loved me, and she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.

They never happened and a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional(易动感情的)”, but she lived “on the surface”.

As years went by and I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way that she did forgive(原谅)me.

I posted the letter and waited for her answer. It didn’t come.

It seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the letter had even got to her.

I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.

Now the present of her desk told me that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work , thought she had never been able to . I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside… a photo of my father and a one-paper letter. Folded(折叠) and refolded many times.

Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.

It’s the same as our parents’ trying to protect us when it’s necessary for us to sharpen our skills to suit the society well. We need to experience how it was like to overcome the difficulties or get badly depressed, and only in this way can we really grow up to carry the burden of life. If our parents keep being over defensive, it is possible that we could never be spiritual healthy or mentally independent.

The needle like rain fell from the boundless sky and plunged into my heart. I forbear with tears, dragging my feet, moving into a path that seems to have not finished.

The first month of the first month of the exam, with the expectation of my family, I walked into the examination room. The students stared at the blackboard with their eyes open, waiting for the arrival of the examination papers. It seems that my heart is filled with fifteen buckets, an unsettled state of mind. This tense mood accompanied me for a day. At the end of the exam, we forgot the trouble before the exam, fling off the nervous mood, we cheered, we scream.

But there was no idea that the end was approaching me. On Friday, the results were announced, and my heart was raised in my voice. At the moment, the classroom was silent, the air seemed to be solidified, and we listened carefully to the teacher's crisp voice, “Lagerstroemia, Chinese...” I despair, I lower the head, to the podium, when I met the papers when my hand trembling, even if the papers are holding, when I saw the paper put a bright red, my tears will spray out, I am embarrassed to go back to your seat.

At the weekend, I went home and listened to the nagging of my ears. My head was big. I didn't have a face to stay at home. I wanted to go back to school early. But I have to learn. I will find work in the future. I can't put it down. I can't live up to my parents' expectations. I will pay for the failure of the exam. I have to sum up this exam. There are eight words in my mind at the moment: preview, study, review and consolidation.

In the family support and encouragement, I returned to the state, I am no longer depressed, continue to move to the life of the light road, and never look back.

I just got into junior high school and I was curious about everything new. And the study of junior high school has also changed a lot. Political geography, as well as the biological history that primary schools have never touched, has become a major subject.

I remember school for about a month now. We will have a monthly exam. The teacher told us a week ago, but my “reading” method is just browsing. When I finished my homework, I went to bed.

In class, the teacher said all the key knowledge, I only remember a book, probably not very clear meaning. Geography class, I do not understand at all, the teacher left the homework, I all copy the students, in addition to geography, other classes are OK.

A week's time will soon be over. In the first night of the month's exam, I looked at the Chinese book and looked at the ancient text, and the author of each article had nothing to do with it. For example, “Mulan poetry” from “Yuefu Poetry”, the author of the Song Dynasty, Guo Maoqian and so on, these literature common sense I will back. Therefore, the language that is only common to literature has turned to mathematics. Mathematics can be said to be my strength, because I am a mathematical representative, so I did not always review the math, just a few pages. It's time to get to English. I can't speak English at all. I can say so. I know English. I don't know English. In this situation, I only recite the words. Later, I looked at novels and so on. I spent the day before the month's exam.

I had some tension on the day of the month's exam. What are the questions I will also get it wrong, probably because of tensions, may also be because I didn't study well. My math is too confident, but a lot of questions wrong. I was really disappointed with the results.

The month exam let me understand, before the exam should be good review.

For example, when in a new situation,an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him.He tries to find out all be can,and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it.He probably isn’t sure how it will all work out,but at least he tries. And if he cannot make things work out right,he doesn’t feel ashamed(羞愧)that he failed,he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook(看法)on life,a special feeling about life, and how he fits into it.

If you look at children, you’ll see great difference between what we call“bright”children and“non-bright”children.They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amount of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out about life-he tries to get in touch with everything around him.But the unintelligent child keeps more to himself and his own dream-world:he seems to have a wall between him and life in general.

Every January we celebrate the life of a great man, Martin Luther King who fought for civil rights. He believed that all Americans should be treated fairly, no matter what their skin colors were.

Dr. King thought this was wrong. He was a Christian minister(牧师) who worked for equal rights for black people. He helped organize protests to change those unfair laws.

It was a hard fight. Dr. King was attracted and arrested(逮捕) many times. But more and more Americans grew to understand that it was wrong to treat black people differently from white people.

In 1963, Dr. King led many people in a march to Washington, D. C. where there he gave his famous speech “I Have a Dream”. He said people should be judged by their hearts, not by their skin colors. His efforts helped bring about new laws to create equal rights for all Amer icans.

There is not enough oil in the world now. As time goes by, it becomes less and less. So what are we going to do when oil runs out? Maybe we need the horses again.

In the Second World War, some people didn’t use gas made from petroleum(石油) in their cars. They made gas from wood and plants instead. The car didn’t go fast, but this was better than nothing. However, in the future, we can’t cut down all our trees to make gas.

Besides different types of gas, we can also use electricity to run our cars, but first we must make electricity! Some countries have coal and make electricity with that, but we might not always have coal, either. Other countries have big, strong rivers, and they can use the power of water to turn turbines(涡轮机) and make electricity easily and cheaply.

We are also able to get power from the ocean tides(海潮). When the tide comes in , the water turns the turbines and when it goes out, it turns them again.

Making mistakes

It’s good to make mistakes. And here’s why.

First of all, mistakes are a clear sign that you are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things because when you’re trying new things you are growing. If you never try anything new, how can you improve and develop? The simple answer is, “You can’t.”

Another good thing about mistakes is this: When you are making mistakes, you are learning. Consider this: Edison failed 10,000 times — before he perfected the light bulb. When he was asked how it felt to fail that many times, he replied that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times, but rather had learned 10,000 things that didn’t work.

Finally, when you make a mistake, you are much closer to success. Why? Because every time you make a mistake, you are one step closer to success. But it doesn’t mean that you can make mistakes without thinking. Instead, when you try something new, you have to think it over, so that you can keep away from some unnecessary mistakes.

There is an old saying that goes, “If you are not making mistakes. You are not trying hard enough.” So go forward and make mistakes. And learn. And grow. And succeed.

I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world.

Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother. “But the desk,” she’d said again, “it’s for Elizabeth.”

I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.

They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional (易动感情的)”. But she lived “on the surface”.

As years passed I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me.

I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came.

My hope turned to disappointment (失望), then little interest and, finally, peace— it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the letter had even got to mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.

Now the present of her desk told, as she’d never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside —a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded (折叠) and refolded many times.

Happiness is not far away

Happiness comes from the little things in life. Simple ways in our daily life of ten help the most. It is not a dream for you to make it come true but a shining star that guides you and a mirror that shows you the meaning of life in the world. If you feel that happiness does not come to you, here are the following steps which will lead you there.

To yourself

Start by treating yourself kindly and becoming your own best friend.

Give up trying so hard to become someone else who is not yourself right now. It’s better to just be you.

To your life

Walk in the park or along the street with a pet. Balance your life with activities and a good rest. Play and do those activities which gently nurture(滋养)your own mind. Playing in your garden or filling your home with beautiful flowers is not a bad try and the memory of those flowers will be always carried with you.

Smile as you think about the future. If you smile, you can not have negative(消极的)thoughts! Concentrate on the positive(积极的) in this world, and look for something joyful.

To your work

Work hard and make efforts to reach your goals, and reward yourself when you are done.

Remove the task that is not useful. We are learning that doing too many tasks at the same time just doesn’t work.

Try writing down what is troubling you, discussing your trouble with yourself. The science now shows that as you write your troubles, your brain will change for the better.

By writing a daily thanks diary you will feel the positive memory and experiences once more, and by remembering these moments, your levels of happiness will rise.

To your friends

You can write a “happy letter” to your family and friends every day. Just a short note will do. You can do the following:

Monday: Write a thank-you note to your friend.

Tuesday: Write a short letter to your friend about a good moment you have recently experienced. Wednesday: Write about a nice moment you plan to experience in the future.

Thursday: Write a letter to someone that is important in your life.

Friday: Write three things that went really well today.

Saturday and Sunday: Go on with your daily thanks diary. If you pay attention to all that is good in

your life instead of negative thoughts, happiness will become a natural part of your day!

Do you know what a resolution is? It’s a kind of promise. Most of the time, we make promises to other people. For example, “Mom, I promise I’m going to tidy my room when I get back from school.” However, promises you make to yourself are resolutions, and the most common kind is New Year’s resolutions. The start of the year is often a time for making resolutions. When we make resolutions at the beginning of the year, we hope that we are going to improve our lives. Some people write down their resolutions and plans for the coming year. This helps to remember their resolutions. Others tell their family and friends about their wishes and plans.

There are different kinds of resolutions. Some are about physical health. For example, some people promise themselves they are going to start an exercise program or eat less fast food. Many resolutions have to do with self-improvement. These are about making yourself a better person. Some people might say they are going to take up a hobby like painting or taking photos, or learn to play the guitar. Some resolutions have to do with better planning, like making a weekly plan for schoolwork. For example, a student may have to find more time to study.

Although there are differences, most resolutions have one thing in common. People hardly ever keep them! There are good reasons for this. Sometimes the resolutions may be too difficult to keep. Sometimes people just forget about them. For this reason, some people say the best resolution is to have no resolutions! How about yo u — will you make any next year?
